3 Steps to Creating a Positive Mindset

Self-talk, the never-ending current of unspoken words we have with ourselves. They include our conscious and subconscious thoughts, beliefs, or assumptions. These thoughts can be positive and reasonable, and they can also be unrealistic, negative, and self-defeating. Re-framing negative thoughts into something positive can help us create more confidence, purpose, and joy.

1. Create space in your day to calm your mind: Take a few minutes every day to be still and re-connect. Meditation and relaxation techniques are helpful tools but if meditation is not your thing, that’s okay too!  Instead, create some time for yourself to relax, turn off electronics and take a breath. Struggle with stillness? Maybe practicing yoga or going for a morning walk or run is more your speed. These activities can also help clear your mind which offers many benefits to your body.

2. Practice Gratitude: Gratitude has many benefits including the reduction of depression and anxiety. It reminds us of the good things we can appreciate even during our most difficult challenges. Make it a part of your day to write down 5 things you’re grateful for that happened the day before. It doesn't have to be anything big.  Maybe a hug, a helping hand, or something that made you laugh.

3. Re-Frame Negative Thoughts:  Take an audit of your own thoughts. Are they limiting or motivating? Write down some of those negative thoughts and then re-frame the narrative to something positive. Every time you find yourself saying the negative, stop yourself and repeat the positive. Where you focus your thoughts is where your energy will go. Here are a few examples of reframing negative thoughts.

Re-framing example:

  • Negative Thought: This is way too hard.

  • Reframe it with: This may take some time to figure out or to complete, etc.

It will take time & energy to shift your perspective and reframe your thoughts; but you are so worth it!  Have patience and grace with yourself while you do this. And always remember…
