Disconnect to Reconnect

Have you ever turned on your phone to check the time or the weather and then found yourself still looking at your phone 30 minutes later?  That is what our electronic devices are designed to do. They distract us and suck us in with a new notification, advertisement, or big announcement.  But when you unplug, it’s said your quality of life is better.  Without the distraction, you are more focused, you have more time to make a home-cooked meal, interact with people you care about, and will help you have a better sleep.

A few years ago, our family embraced a one-month electronic detox challenge. Prior to the challenge, I was blissfully unaware of how many opinions, perspectives, and energies I was subconsciously taking in. We are constantly being sold something and marketed to through social media and TV.

Take an audit of your own digital consumption. What are you neglecting when you are plugged in?  Disconnecting from social media and TV from time to time will free up space in your life for human connection and time for some self-care.

Ready to disconnect to reconnect? If yes, that’s awesome! What would that look like?

  • 30 mins, 1 hour, after supper?

  • What will you choose to do with your time while disconnected from social media?

  • Is there a project you have been too busy to work on, maybe there is a book you want to read?

  • Time with your kids or spouse?

Life is so short. There’s truly only one thing more precious than our time, and that’s who we chose to spend it with.
