Many of the decisions we make in a day, are in fact habits and not decisions at all. We do them unconsciously because they are so deeply engrained in us. Our brains are created to build strong networks of neurons to support our current habits. The more we repeat something, the neuron connections become stronger and more efficient. Those connections play a role in us repeating tasks such as brushing our teeth, driving our vehicles and so many other habits that we are unaware of. Some of those habits are helpful and others not so much.
Why is the Challenge for 66 Days? More than likely, you have heard the quote, “It takes 21 days to form a new habit.” Unfortunately, the quote is a myth. According to Cognitive Neuroscientist, Dr. Caroline Leaf and recent studies, it takes a 63 - 66 days to change an automated habit, when it comes to the mind with much of this being contributed to Neuroplasticity. Dr. Caroline Leaf describes it as... “the change in neural pathways and synapses that occurs due to certain factors, like behavior, environment, or neural processes. The brain engages in synaptic pruning, deleting the neural connections that are no longer necessary or useful, and strengthening the ones that are.”
