5 Ways You Might Be Holding Yourself Back from the Life You Really Want

Are you living the life you really want, or are you just going through the motions? Too often, we’re the ones standing in our own way without even realizing it. Here are five ways you might be holding yourself back - and what to do about them.

1. You’re Waiting for Permission: How many times have you caught yourself saying, “I’ll do it when the timing is right,” or “I just need someone to tell me it’s okay”? No one is coming to hand you a permission slip for the life you want. The only approval you need is your own. Decide today that you’re worthy of change, even if it feels uncomfortable.

2. Fear Is Running the Show: Fear is sneaky. It whispers doubts in your ear, convincing you that you’re too old, too late, or too inexperienced. But here’s the truth: fear isn’t a stop sign; it’s a compass. Instead of letting it paralyze you, use it to guide you toward what truly matters. If it scares you, it could mean that it’s worth doing.

3. You’re Stuck in the Shoulds: You’ve spent your whole life doing what you should do - raising kids, supporting others, being responsible. And while those things are beautiful and important, they don’t have to define your next chapter. What do you want? What lights you up? Give yourself permission to explore what excites you, not just what’s expected of you.

4. You’re Clinging to Old Stories: The stories we tell ourselves shape our reality. If you keep repeating, “I’m not good at this,” or “I’ve never been that kind of person,” you’re reinforcing limitations that aren’t even real. Reframe your narrative. Instead of saying, “I’ve never done this before,” try “I’m learning something new.” Small shifts in language create big shifts in mindset.

5. You’re Waiting to Feel Ready: You will never feel 100% ready. Confidence doesn’t come before action - it comes because of action. The most successful, fulfilled women aren’t the ones who had it all figured out before they started. They’re the ones who started before they felt ready. So take the first step. Then the next. Then the next. Then the next.
